According to preliminary data, one Su-24 pilot was killed in the air by fire from the ground, the Russian General Staff reported. The search and rescue operation is ongoing, according to the military body.

The Turkish Presidency issued a statement claiming that the aircraft had violated Turkish airspace.

"A Russian Su-24 plane was downed under the rules of engagement because it violated the Turkish air space despite the warnings," the presidency said.

However, Russian FM denied allegations that its fighter jet had violated the Ankara's airspace and said that the cause of the crash and the fate of the pilots remain unclear.

A plane exploded in the air and the fireball fell on a Turkmen mountain on the Syrian side of the border, CNN-Turk and NTV televisions reported.
